Founded in 1988, ‘Downtown After 5′ concert series has been an essential part of Asheville’s live music scene presenting a diverse selection of acts over its’ 34 year history. The first April 15th event of the 2022 season was even sweeter than most as the previous year’s series was put on hold due to coronavirus concerns. This hiatus didn’t dampen the crowd’s enthusiasm as proceedings were kicked off by the gloriously soulful Abby Bryant and the Echoes and followed by an electric performance by The Fritz, an Asheville based five piece band that layer elements of world music over funk infused melodies.
This is Pisgah AVL’s fourth year providing production for the event. Located at the lower end of Lexington avenue it’s perhaps fitting that the monthly shows take place just a stones throw away from the Moog Synthesizer factory. As well as providing a platform for local talent the Asheville Downtown Association which hosts the event leverages the event to support local non-profit organizations raising over $225,000 for valuable causes.
For Pisgah AVL it’s our fourth year at the helm providing complete production for the event. For staging Downtown’ we’ve always opted to deploy a Stageline SL100; this is a self contained stage and roof system allowing us to safely erect the stage with two people in less than an hour; this helps to minimize extended road closures and reduces crewing costs.
Meanwhile audio is provided by 16 d&b audiotechnik T10 line array loudspeakers and five V-series subwoofers which provide precise control over the audio dispersion. Over the last couple of years local noise ordinances have come under increased scrutiny and the longevity of events such as this one depend on keeping disturbance beyond the event boundary to a minimum. This was also the first Downtown Event using one of our new Allen Heath SQ6 mixing consoles. While we’ve been using its’ bigger brother the Avantis for over a year now the smaller footprint and huge capability of the SQ consoles make them perfectly suited for mid-sized shows.
