Pisgah AVL help Calvary Worship Center carry out a comprehensive lighting renovation.

Robert Shaffer of Pisgah AVL with Pastor Rusty Smart & Brody Cole of Calvary Worship Center

While Covid-19 stalled plans for many of us, the members of Calvary Worship Center in Marshall NC made the best of the situation by undertaking a comprehensive renovation of their sanctuary space. The Pentecostal Church prides itself on being a welcoming, multi-generational congregation where everyone is family; the main goal of renovation was for the space to reflect that.

Pastor Rusty Smart explained that a refit had been on the cards for some time as there hadn’t been any significant updates to the space for over 20 years, most importantly the stage area had no lighting. “We started live streaming very quickly but once we started looking at the lighting it looked terrible and outdated” said Brody Cole, director of the Psalm ministries, “that pushed us ahead of schedule”. Pastor Rusty had been recommended Pisgah AVL by another local minister so got in touch with Pisgah’s Robert Shaffer to start discussing refresh options.

“We’re really happy with how good the ColorSource Jr’s look, they are incredibly cost effective and we know they’ll be giving reliable service for years to come”.

Given that a large portion of the re-fit was funded by the congregation’s generous donations it was important that the technical aspects were kept within budget. Having worked with ETC products in the past Robert knew that the ColorSource JR fixtures would be the perfect fit for the project, the newly released lights feature a punchy 5700 lumen output and are color calibrated from the factory to ensure that they look as stunning over a livestream as they do in person. To top it off there’s also the assurance that they come with a five year warranty on the complete fixture assembly and an additional five years on the LED components. “We’re really happy with how good the ColorSource Jr’s look” said Robert “they are incredibly cost effective and we know they’ll be giving reliable service for years to come”.

ETC’s ColorSource20 Drives the newly installed lighting system.

Driving the whole setup is the ETC ColorSource 20 lighting console allowing Brody and the technical team to pre-program a variety of different looks for different parts of the service or even adding custom colors for seasonal events. User friendliness was a big consideration for the system design, in churches there are often a variety of operators so it should be as quick as possible to get a new user up and running. Providing power to all the lights in the room are ETC Color source relays, when a signal from the controller isn’t present the power is turned off. This means that the technical staff don’t have to hunt around for a breaker panel and the need for costly dimmer packs is eliminated.

12 More Chauvet Fixtures illuminate the rear of the stage.

Moving to the rear of the stage area eight Chauvet wash fixtures were added to add dimension to the stage another four waterproof lights were installed behind the rear wall to illuminate the central cross and baptism pool.  At the same time a new 6K projector was added to the front of the room and an older projector was relocated to the rear of the sanctuary to function as a confidence monitor for speakers or musicians. The new setup had really helped improve the feel of the space and in turn the livestreams have been transformed so that congregation members watching remotely can really feel a part of each service.

When asked about the feedback so far Pastor Rusty reports “It’s been accepted really well, we’ve had state leaders come in and they’ve really bragged on it, how we were able to bring it together and how it’s a smooth transition and style for all, it’s not too contemporary or too traditional”. Pisgah AVL are very happy to have been part of the transformation at Calvary. In closing pastor Rusty said; “It’s just been great I would recommend Pisgah AVL, for anyone looking for a small job to a large job, they’re not going to oversell. They’re not going to try give you something you don’t need. They wan’t to work with your budget and what you’re needing”.
